Early Voting – 27 Locations Open Today

Today, early voting in the Shelby County General election gets a lot easier.

All 27 early voting locations open today. Below is a searchable map of all those locations. Click on each icon to get the times each location is open.

Here’s the official list from the Election Commission of Early Voting sites and times.

Most sites are open 11am to 7pm. The Election Commission site on Nixon and Calvary Episcopal downtown are exceptions.

Early voting continues at these sites through July 28th.

With all these locations open, there are plenty of opportunities to make your voice heard.

Not sure who to support? Here are my recommendations.

Turnout

Turnout has been swift so far. Numbers released by the Election Commission last night show nearly 2800 voters on the first two days just 5 sites were open.

To give you an idea of how that compares to previous years, I made this helpful table:

Day 1 Day 2
August 2018 1868 902
August 2016 851 44
August 2014 889 261
August 2012 471 108

*Note: Day 1 totals include absentee and nursing home voting collected prior to that day.

You don’t have to be a mathematician to see just how much more turnout we have this year compared to previous years.

In fact, this year, so far almost .5% of all voters in Shelby County have participated. That’s a lot of turnout for the first two days.

It should be noted that this year is the first year five sites have been open for their first two days of early voting. In years past, the only location open for the first two days was the former Election Commission site downtown. That site isn’t active this time around because the Election Commission offices have moved.

So, perhaps, just perhaps, the additional sites actually do help turnout. We’ll have to see how Monday’s numbers turn out to really make that determination.

Another thing to note: so far, Democrats have turned out in far greater numbers than Republicans. That’s a 2:1 ratio. But don’t let that lull you into a sense of complacency. Typically, GOP turnout starts to outpace Democratic turnout as all the early voting locations open.

So lets keep that momentum going! Go vote! Take your friends to the polls before you head to happy hour, or dinner. If you’re going for an afternoon run or bike ride, take your ID and stop by an Early Voting location before you head out. Its a great way to get your sweat on, and get your vote on. Also its a great break from the oppressive heat.

All in all, I couldn’t be more pleased with how many people have taken the opportunity to vote. Keep the momentum going! Go Vote!
