Thanks for that! Believe me, Memphis is crazy enough that keeping up with the County gov't is just about impossible! There's someone like me in Raliegh, I'm sure of it. Maybe they haven't found the medium yet, or maybe you haven't found them yet. Hell, why not just do it yourself? It's not that hard, but the pay kinda stinks.

Steve, thank for yeoman service.

I think that no matter what the citizenry does (speak out and express dissatisfaction or shut up and ignore), Willie Herenton will continue to play us for fools. And the like "fools" that we are, we will continue to dance (some with enthusiasm more proper for a deity than a walking ethical nightmare). I just pray for a final end to his administration and his arrogance, and his return to private life (he doesn't have a prayer against Steve Cohen), so that we as a city, under a new, positive and pro-active administration, can begin to pick up the pieces and heal the wounds.

I have posted some comments lately saying pretty much the same thing (at least I think, my ADD kicked in about halfway through your long blog). I was very uneasy when Myron Lowery started "appointing" his "administration" and talked about his plans for his 90 day stint. I could almost picture Herenton's teeth gritting, listening to everyone talking about no more Willie after the 10th.

I am white but I thought the white council members resolution yesterday was rather meaningless, except to, as you said, play into WWH's hands. I look at it as partially an emotional rant and part playing to their constituents. Now WWH has an excuse, backed be Lasimba and his crowd, to delay leaving a while longer.

Those wanting Herenton to leave should be quiet, ignore him, spoil his fun, so maybe he might pick up his toys and go to another playground.

I don't disagree with much of what you're saying here, however, because the Mayor rescinded the resignation, for what ever reason, the question of whether the Council can perform any action to work for a special election is in question. Even Brian Stephens agrees with this, per the update above.

Yes, the new Council's backbone is refreshing. I'm glad that they are trying to be proactive. I think that in this case, they jumped the gun and are letting the Mayor define the game.

I'm no fan of Herenton the Mayor. I think the city will find a new level of prosperity upon his departure, but until the Council actually accepts a valid written resignation, of which there is none at this time, their hands are tied, or worse, they are playing HIS game.

Any ounce of goodwill that the mayor had with "non-cronies" has evaporated. His actions look bizarre, except to his hardcore supporters in the city, that roughly number around 40%. If he is looking toward Congress, which I believe is his end game, he is outsmarting himself by playing with the city council. Yeah, he knows how to play the different sides of the city against each other, but this could backfire. There must be something in the polling data that suggest to Steve Cohen to keep his mouth shut about Herenton. WW is clever, but fatigue is setting in. It always happens when politicos overstay their welcome. I like the new backbone of this council, it may be the best that we've had in the last 20 years.
